General Dynamics Information Technology has an immediate opening for a GIS / Java Programmer in New Orleans, LA.

Strong Java/GIS web applications developer with proven experience in developing large web based applications.  This position requires knowledge of the principles, practices, and procedures used in all phases of full life cycle applications and systems development, engineering, programming, and analysis at a highly technical level.  The Programmer is a contributing member and team lead of developers in deploying web-based, data-driven applications. Builds and codes applications and/or models using various computer programming languages. Complies with all QA standards.

Essential Functions & Responsibilities

1. Plans, develops, tests, and documents mainframe-resident and client/server applications programs.

2. Generates new code and corrects, converts, and/or modifies existing code to meet specifications.

3. Prepares detailed specifications from which code will be written.

4. Confers with end-users to analyze specified methods and procedures, identify problems, and document specific requirements.

5. Writes and updates technical documentation such as users' manuals, product specifications, and training materials.

6. Performs a variety of testing procedures on assigned products, analyzes test results, and corrects problems.

7. Maintains current knowledge of relevant technologies as assigned.

8. Participates in special projects as required.

Education & Experience

•·         Bachelor's Degree in a Computer Science or related technical discipline, or the equivalent combination of education, technical certifications or training, or work experience.

•·         Requires 3-5 years experience as a software programmer with proven experience in large Java/GIS web based applications initiatives.

•·         Experience in the oil and gas industry desired.

Unique/Additional Requirements

•·         Knowledge of the fundamental concepts, practices, and procedures used in computer programming.

•·         Proficiency in the use of one or more specific technologies, depending on job assignment.

•·         Professional Certification(s) may be required, depending on job assignment.

Successful candidate must be able to obtain and retain a Department of Interior, MMS security clearance. Candidates must be authorized to work in the US and a resident of the US for the previous 3 years with no longer than a 90 day absence.

WORKING CONDITIONS: The work is typically performed in an office environment, which requires normal safety precautions; work may require some physical effort in the handling of light materials, boxes or equipment.
