3rd Quarter Coastal Bend GIS Meeting
September 15th, 2016
Conrad Blucher Institute – RM 104
6300 Ocean Dr, Corpus Christi TX 78412
We have a few things of note on the agenda. First, Officer Nominations for Vice President and Secretary. Yes, it has been 2 years already! It has really flown by. So, put your thinking caps on and think of people who you’d like to see carry on with us into the future. (Please speak with the person before nominating them.) We will begin taking nominations at the meeting, and ballots will be cast in November, as part of the 4th quarter meeting. Secondly, we are also looking forward to GIS Day again, and will be discussing how we can help and how we can bolster the professional track this year.
We will have a presentation from Dr. Rick Smith. He will be presenting about the document and scanning project where they have taken on the task of scanning over 28,000 documents from 9 map collections from the late 19th century to the late 20th century. His group has purchased large format scanners, developed scanning and cataloging procedures, an automatic scan cropping application, a web-based cataloging system and a prototype web-based spatial search portal. His group has also been spatially locating the maps to their locations on Earth. The focus of this presentation will be a review of the entire project up to its current status. The review will cover their scanning hardware, cataloging software, scanning procedures, cataloging procedures, use of DSpace REST API for publishing documents, and the prototype spatial search portal. The presentation will be a mix of high-level discussion, system demonstration, and technical explanation.
