Track 1:  Esri - The Power of a Story: Presenting Your Work using ArcGIS StoryMaps  8 AM – Noon  Frisco 3

Session Description -  
ArcGIS StoryMaps let you inform, engage, and inspire your audience by harnessing the power of maps and geography to tell your story. Build apps that combine authoritative maps and data with narrative text, photos, and multimedia content. You can share your story maps publicly or within your enterprise. ArcGIS StoryMaps are part of ArcGIS, so you can use the full power of the world's leading GIS platform to tell your story. 

  • Users will need to bring their own laptops with access to the internet and Chrome installed.

Track 2:  David Allen - Introduction to Arcade, Part 1 – 8 AM – Noon  Frisco 4

Cost:  $ 150

Users will need to bring their own laptops with access to an ArcGIS Online Account  
Session Description -  
This workshop (Part 1 of a 2 part Introduction) will teach you the ins and outs of the scripting language Arcade, which is used throughout the ArcGIS product line. As the technology advances, Esri is incorporating Arcade into tools you use everyday as well as web apps that you may build. These include attribute value calculations, symbology, and labelling on the simple end to specialized pop-up displays and controlling your dashboards on the complex end. As you implement more and more of the Esri products for your desktop and web uses, you will find that knowing how to write Arcade scripts is essential.

The workshop will cover:

  • The basic structure of the Arcade scripting language
  • Arcade Profiles – where can Arcade be used
  • Introducing the Arcade Expression Builder pane
  • Arcade in Field Calculations – ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Online
  • Customizing Pop-up Text Elements with Arcade
  • Logic Controls with Arcade – Iif() and When()
  • Controlling Symbology with Arcade Expressions – ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Online
  • Formatting feature labels with Arcade – text, numbers, and dates
  • On-The-Fly attribute calculations in labels and pop-ups with Arcade
  • Using Esri Living Atlas / Other agency’s data on-the-fly
  • Exploring the Esri GitHub Arcade Repository for example expressions

The workshop will include many hands-on examples and expressions for you to build, and point out many tips and shortcuts that will have you making useful Arcade expressions in no time.


Track 3:  Sally Holl - Austin Community College  –  Make Beautiful Maps:  GIS Cartographic Maps   8 AM – Noon  Frisco 5

Cartography in ArcGIS Pro

Sally Holl has guided 1,000 students to success and national recognition in GIS cartographic design since 2014 and has been using ArcGIS software since 1996. She has served as a geographer, programmer, analyst, researcher, project manager, and educator in both the public sector and academia, including USGS, UC Irvine, University of Adelaide, and most recently Austin Community College where she is currently a full time faculty member in the GIS Department. She earned a BA from Oberlin College, a teaching certificate from Cal State Fullerton and an MSc from UT Austin, but she believes the best education comes from experience.

Session Description
We all want to make the best maps ever. ArcGIS Pro is a powerful desktop analysis tool; now learn how to make it work for you as a design tool. Learn simple but powerful strategies that any desktop GIS user can implement. See real-world “before” and “after” map makeover examples. Learn how to evaluate your designs for accessibility and quality assurance. Avoid map design pitfalls. I will present strategies for effective static and dynamic map design, with an emphasis on static maps.

Learning Objective: Evaluate and improve your existing map designs.

Session Description -  The world of 3D is now, discover how to unlock the full potential of geospatial data with ArcGIS. In this workshop, you'll learn how to explore, analyze, and bring your data to life in 3D using ArcGIS Pro. Transform a 2D map into a vibrant 3D scene, work with elevation properties, and create a rich environment with imagery, buildings, and trees that you can easily share.

Track 3:  John May - Supercharging Enterprise Databases - 1 PM – 5 PM    Frisco 5

Cost:  $ 150

 Session Description:  Have you ever wished that you could have attributes get automatically populated with data from other features or related tables. Have you ever wished that you could see the results of a geoprocessing operation without having to create a new feature class? This class will explore SQL techniques that you can implement in your enterprise databases that will perform these operations, which will give you the ability to streamline work flows and reduce the chances of erroneous data entry.

Session Description
  ArcGIS Notebooks is an integrated Jupyter notebook experience for ArcGIS. Explore how to create, share, and use Python notebooks that perform advanced modeling, support machine learning, explore data, analyze locations, detect anomalies, and even automate ArcGIS administration tasks. In this workshop you will learn how to apply spatial tools, build effective machine learning models, build and share notebooks as items in ArcGIS and learn how to automate common GIS administration tasks.

Track 2:  David Allen - Advanced Arcade (Part 1)  8 AM – Noon  Frisco 4

Session Description:     This is Part 1 of a 2-part Advanced Arcade session).  It seems that with every release of an ArcGIS product there are more areas where Arcade can be used to customize your workflow. This advanced workshop will show how Arcade is used in mobile apps such as ArcGIS Online maps for Experience Builder, Field Maps, ArcGIS Dashboards, and more. A working knowledge of Arcade would be useful before attempting this workshop,  and be ready to see the newest and most advanced uses of Arcade.

Techniques covered will include:

  • Logic Controls with Arcade – Iif() and When()
  • Using the Arcade Element </> in Pop-ups – Text, tables, charts and more
  • Using Geoprocessing tools in a pop-up and field calculation
  • More Date Functions
  • Dictionaries and Arrays
  • Using Arcade in a Dashboard display
  • Arcade for Custom Forms in ArcGIS Online and Field Maps
  • Using the For loop with Arcade Expressions
  • Creating and Using Custom Functions
  • Exploring the Esri GitHub Arcade Repository for REALLY advanced expressions

Track 3:  NewEdge Services:  Understanding ArcGIS Enterprise Configurations – 8 AM – Noon  Frisco 5

Lee Irminger GISP, Geospatial System Architect

Session Description - Understanding Standard ArcGIS Enterprise Configurations. This workshop will focus on the ArcGIS Enterprise components (ArcGIS Server, Portal for ArcGIS, ArcGIS Data Store, ArcGIS Web Adaptor and the Geodatabase) and recommended architecture. A broad range of topics will be covered including the roles of each component, security, network requirements, the cloud, single sign on, database maintenance, and tips and tricks to get the most out of your system.

Lee Irminger, with NewEdge Services, has extensive experience with ArcGIS products, specifically ArcGIS Enterprise. Lee graduated from the University of North Georgia with a Bachelor’s in Applied GIS and Environmental Science. Prior to joining NewEdge, he was the GIS Administrator for the 2nd largest county, Gwinnett County, in Georgia where he worked with a federated ArcGIS environment with staging and production on 35 servers.

Track 1:  Esri - Widgets, Widgets, Widgets in ArcGIS Experience Builder - 1pm – 5pm   Frisco 3

Session Description:   Using ArcGIS Experience Builder to create web applications is the future of developing modern, interactive, no-code web apps. Choose a template and create an immersive web experience for your audience by unifying web apps, web pages, interactive widgets, and both 2D and 3D data through a flexible drag-and-drop interface. In this workshop, learn and work with some of the newest widgets like the Business Analyst, the Oriented Imagery widget and others. Participants will require their own laptops and mobile device for the session.

Track 3:  Tim Nolan:  Efficiency & Management Hacks: Building Humane Systems -    1 PM – 5 PM  Frisco 5 

Cost:  $ 150  Laptops not required

Session Description:  “Visual Management is the application of Lean and Agile practices to build new ways of working for individuals

and teams on-the-fly” (Modus Institute).

In this highly interactive workshop, we will concentrate on…

  • How we as professionals are doing the right work? 
  • How do we come to alignment?
  • How do we make decisions?
  • Do we understand the work to be done?
  • How do we prioritize our work?
  • When is it to be delivered?
  • How complex is the work? 
  • Where might the work stumble?
  • Can we see what is important?

We will take a systems thinking approach to the complexities of new/unexplored work, (mis)understanding, decision-less meetings, interruptions, prioritization, communicating decisions and difficulty of collaboration.  We will introduce the system of communications, system of meetings and the system of doing the right work at the right time.

We will conduct practical exercises that focus on visualizing our and limiting our work in progress.  We will look at value stream mapping as an effective visualization and put those visualizations into action. There will be exercises to harvest ideas and tackle sticky problems.  Ultimately, we will turn learning into action.
