Title: Tribal Transportation Program Safety Funds: Improving Rural Road Safety in Oklahoma

Abstract: Transportation fatalities and injuries severely impact the quality of life in Indian country.  Statistics show that Native American and Alaska Native populations experience higher rates of transportation related fatal injuries. Federally recognized Tribes receive federal funds through the Tribal Transportation Program, referred to as the TTP, the largest program in the Office of Federal Lands Highway. The purpose of the TTP is to provide safe and adequate transportation and public road access to and within Indian reservations, Indian lands, and Alaska Native Village communities. Each year under the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL), as enacted by the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (Public Law 117-58), 4% of the available TTP funds are set aside to address transportation safety issues in Native America.  Awarded annually, TTPSF grants are available to federally recognized Indian tribes through a competitive, discretionary program.  Projects are chosen whose outcomes will address the prevention and reduction of death or serious injuries in transportation related incidents, such as motor vehicle crashes.
Cross Timbers Consulting specializes in tribal transportation.  We have assisted several tribes with safety project applications.  This presentation shares a few projects that have been awarded in rural Oklahoma: the Kaw Nation (Kay County), the Muscogee Nation (Okmulgee County), and the Absentee Shawnee Tribe (Cleveland County).
