Title: Transforming Tribal Land Records into an Interactive GIS Asset Management System
Abstract: The University of Oklahoma's Center for Spatial Analysis (CSA) established a partnership with the Kiowa Tribe in early 2026 to develop a centralized geospatial database and accompanying web mapping application to support the management of tribal lands and assets. Historically, the Kiowa Tribe's land and asset information has been maintained across numerous PDF reports and Public Land Survey System maps, presenting challenges for the efficient visualization and querying of information. To address these challenges, Phase I of the project has focused on transforming static records into structured digital datasets. This effort has involved georeferencing and digitizing a myriad of maps as well as extracting and organizing scores of PDF documents into a spreadsheet.
Phase II of the project will build upon this work through the developing an interactive web mapping application (The Kiowa Tribe Data Viewer) that integrates the digitized spatial and attribute data into a centralized platform. The Data Viewer will provide the Kiowa Tribe with streamlined access to its land and asset information, supporting the Tribe's ability to manage and access its own information.
